Hoffhman on Driveshafts

Driveshafts are aften seen as a weak point on Honda converted Elise.

Its nice to see something from the horses mouth on this issue:

Randy @Hoffmans:

"OK, 24 hour race and driveshafts...

First set of driveshafts were meticulously prepared with the right joints and plenty of time spend stripping and rebuilding and greasing inner and outer joints. My expectation was that we wouldn't see a problem as we had been through all the issues and knew exactly how to get them to last (they did in the first 24 hour race). Problem is that after a VERY lengthy conversation with my CV grease supplier I was persuaded to run the Neo Synthetic HPCC#1 grease in the inner Tripode joint as well as the outer CV joint. Bad move. My thinking was that we would run this setup on the test day and run with it if we had no problems. We tested the car a few weeks previous to the event and the Tripode were fine although we didn't manage as much running as I would have liked due to stoppages. Come the Official test day the car ran for several hard hours and, again no problems. Come the day qually the following day a vibration had started from the back of the car. We kept running it and the inner Tripode let go, the cause was poor lubrication as the grease was the wrong type. After that, the spare driveshafts we had weren't preppared to the same standard and by the end of the race we were using completely unsuitable joints as at £650 a set you can't afford to keep that many new spares.

Everything that we have learnt from both 24 hour races has gone into the standard link-up drive shaft setup."
